Denise Billen-Mejia MD: Certified Hypnotist

All about me, aside from the fact that I'm originally from the UK and drink

a lot of tea

I am a retired physician,  now a consulting hypnotist, living in Wilmington Delaware.

I was born and raised in Salisbury, UK, and came to the USA in 1973 to study but having a tremendous love of travel I spent some time studying and working in Ilinois, New York, Winnepeg Canada, Leuven Belgium, Santo Domingo DR, as well as travel purely for fun in Spain, Scotland, and Israel.

After completing my MD I worked as research assistant in weight control at the Endocrine Department before starting my residency St. Luke's Roosevelt Medical Center in Manhattan which was then affiliated with Columbia University.

By the time I finished my residency and fellowship in pediatrics, I had two little boys and my husband and I decided to move out of the big city.  I joined the staff of a Community Hospital Emergency Department and, after adding a third son, we stayed in PA for several years ultimately hopping over the Delaware River to live in NJ while I continued to work in SE PA.

My husband and I moved to Delaware in 2019 and the three sons have all long flown the nest. That, of course, gives me even more excuse for travel when there aren't pandemic restrictions in place.

When not working I also enjoy live theatre, reading, and walking. I also love to cook for friends and family (I was vegetarian for many years but adopted a  whole-food/plant-based diet over 5 years ago)

Other interests are my work with the Delaware Council of Faith-Based Partnerships as the representative of the Baha'i Faith and working with Peace Week Delaware,  an annual event that spotlights grass-roots organizations addressing social justice issues like housing and health inequity.

Throughout my career, I have been passionate about helping others achieve and maintain good health by incorporating traditional and holistic approaches. Now, I work both directly with clients and educate other physicians on the use of hypnosis within medical practice.

I will be speaking at the Dave Elman Legacy Conference January,  20-22

Dave Elman is famous for much more than a brilliant induction.

He was among a select group of experts who pioneered the use of hypnosis in medicine and dentistry in the mid-20th century.
